Perhaps it’s the sheer unknown—more than 80% of the ocean remains unexplored. The pressure in the deepest parts is over 1,000 times greater than at the surface, and sunlight never penetrates those depths. Yet life thrives there. From bioluminescent creatures lighting up the dark to bizarre species like the ghost shark and giant tube worms, the deep sea is a testament to nature’s resilience and adaptability. Share your favorite fact about the ocean’s hidden world and join the conversation about the incredible mysteries beneath our feet. The deep ocean is filled with mysterious sounds that scientists have not yet fully identified or explained. One example is the Upsweep, sound detected when PMEL began recording SOSUS in 1991. The source level is high enough to be recorded throughout the Pacific ocean. It can be roughly located near the location of inferred volcanic seismicity, but the origin is unresolved.
